I went through a phase of hating Facebook. I felt that I couldn’t really post what was really on my mind because of who might be reading my status updates. I went through all the privacy settings and stuff but there were still people (like family members and certain workmates) who I didn’t want to see what I was writing. I could have deleted them but then I wouldn’t be able to post on their wall etc.
Then I found this article on Mashable and oh my god, it’s improved my Facebook experience. Specifically point 2 “HOW TO: Hide Status Updates From Certain People”. It’s quite surprising how liberating it is to be able to be honest on your Facebook without your Mum thinking you’ve got a potty mouth.
In a nutshell this is what I did: I made a list of people who I wanted to receive my updates. To do this simply find in the top right corner “Account”, click it and on the drop down menu click “Edit Friends”. At the top of that page is something called “Create A List”. It’s fairly easy to spot. When you hit that a little window will pop up. Make up a name for your list and then click and highlight all the people who you WANT to read your updates. When you’ve finished click “Create list”.
Next time you update your status, underneath the box that says “What’s on your mind?” appears a little padlock. Click on that and select “Custom”. A window will pop up with a drop down menu with an option “Specific people”. You then enter your group name and then check the box at the bottom that reads “Make this my default setting”. Save the setting and you’re good to go.
You can also make lists for people who you want to see photos and all that other stuff but you’ll have to hve a play round with that. Hopefully this has helped you vent yourself with more confidence without the fear of who will read it or getting fired :D
